Matt Cowley has been Harpenden South West's County Councillor since May 2025. He also serves as a Conservative District Councillor for Harpenden South and as the Conservative Leader on St. Albans District Council. He previously served as a Harpenden Town Councillor from 2019 until 2023.
On the District Council, Matt sits on a number of committees, including the Housing & Inclusion Committee, where he is pushing the Council's Lib Dem Administration to get on top of the unacceptable level of service social housing tenants are receiving, with huge waits for basic repairs. He previously sat on the Public Realm Committee and he has been leading the fight against Lib Dem plans to introduce parking charges on Harpenden's High Street. Whilst a Town Councillor, he served two terms as Chair of the Town Council Planning Committee.
As a County Councillor, Matt is the Shadow Cabinet Member for Highways, working to build a new Conservative plan to fix Hertfordshire's roads.
Having lived in Harpenden his whole working life, Matt is passionate about protecting it as a great place for people to live, work and spend time.
